It may not seem like it at first in Vietnam, but the art scene is alive and well here. There are live music and cool art galleries around if you know where to look. Of course, one sign of the thriving art scene has popped up in recent years with the appearance of murals around the city. Saigon also being a big city there are plenty of cool things to try near them. In a city like this, there is always something to do and see. Here are five murals and cool places near them.

1 – Nguyen Huu Canh Mural

The first of the five murals are just as you are entering District 1 near the zoo, there is a long wall that follows the street. This stretch of paintings shows some scenes of the Vietnamese countryside. Even more, here in the big city, you get a chance to view the country. Nearby the mural is some cool places in the Japanese area off of Lê Thánh Tôn. This area is the go-to spot for Japanese expats and those seeking a more authentic Japanese culinary experience. Or, if you fancy take a trip to the zoo.

2 – Pasteur Street Mural

The next mural you will find two cool places in the alley (hem) off of Pasteur Street which is part of the original taproom for the craft brewery of the same name. Furthermore, in this hem is a long empty wall that the brewery took full advantage of with a cool textual mural to fill the clear space and make it oh so more inviting. Which it must be since the marketing manager has mentioned many tourists come to take selfies of the mural and leave. So, get your selfies, but then stop by their original taproom or the Hem taproom. The Hem offers an excellent hideaway rooftop with a great framed view of the Bitexco Building.

3 – Phạm Ngu Lao Mural

Motorbikes are a part of life here in Vietnam. Similarly, this mural showing a girl in a helmet is the essence of getting around in Vietnam. Nearby you are not hurting for a choice of cool places and something for everyone. Nearby the mural is so many cool places. On Đặng Thị Nhu, you have the Craft beer place Winking Seal Brewing Co. or for cocktails the Rooftop lounge Air 360. Whereas the excellent second location for Saigon Coffee Roastery is on the same street if alcohol is not your thing. Most notably, around the corner on Calmette is the best chocolate in Vietnam at Maison Marou.

4 – Quan Nuong Co Le Mural

Bui Vien can be an overload of way too loud megabars with cheap beers. In contrast, there are some murals and cool places to hunt down. One being a small local eatery Quán nướng cô Lệ that I am usually the only westerner dining here. The local place has fantastic grilled food (nuong) at reasonable prices. As well, the bonus of another mural for you to check out right on the wall of the building it occupies beside the makeshift restaurant.

5 – Ong Cao Mural

This final mural has a couple of cool places worth getting through the hassle of Bui Vien. Not sure if it is part of the Craft beer bar Ong Cao or just a happy coincidence, but in the alley (hem) next to Ong Cao is another mural you have to check out. Yet, this mural seems to be a crazy mix of imagery and bright colors that add to the more laid-back atmosphere of this section of Bui Vien. Even if craft beer is not your thing them right next door is a rooftop bar and plenty of other places to try in the area.
