Whilst born during the conflict I’ve long had an interest in Australian involvement. As a result I chose to visit Vung Tau and chose this tour with Giang and Mrs Huong.
It was probably the best tour I’ve been on. There was far more to the tour than I expected and Mrs Huong took me to several other places of interest. Her knowledge and Aussie knowledge and accent was a revelation! Over 20yrs experience including holding services, maintaining sites, her contacts, intimate knowledge and even hosting fmr PM Howard underscore what an impressive day this turned out to be.
Those familiar with the Battle of Long Tan will know where to go and what to see however Mrs Huong adds so much much including some additional visits.
If you have any interest in a tour please select this. Her engaging personality stood out from introduction to farewell in HCMC. Seriously, a 20/10 experience!

Itinerary
Let’s Go!
Following pick up at your hotel at 8:00am, we’ll take a pleasant 1 and 1/2 hour drive to Ba Ria Central Market. On the way, we’ll stop to stretch our legs and pick up your local guide for the Long Tan – Nui Dat area. Your guide will give you an introduction to the Ba Ria area and history. Then, we’ll head to the Phuoc Long Tunnels, a 1.4km tunnel system where our guide will tell fascinating stories that illustrate the life of the Viet Cong during the wartime. He or she will also explain how the cashew nut grows. Vietnam is the largest producer and exporter of cashews in the world!
Step Back In Time In Nui Dat & Luscombe Airfield
Next, we’ll arrive in Nui Dat, or SAS Hill, the former base of the Australian Army. Our guide will illuminate the important history of this area, showing photos so that it is easy for you to remember or imagine this period in time. Then we’ll drive to Luscombe Airfield, which has been preserved in a small village. Our guide will tell you the stories associated with this significant site. Here, we’ll also have a chance to visit the kindergarten built by Australian Veterans.
Absorb The History Of The Battle Of Long Tan
We’ll continue on to the Long Tan Cross, the most emotional part of the tour. With flowers and incense, we’ll perform a ritual ceremony to show our respect for the people who passed away in this place. After this, we’ll view Horseshoe Hill from the main street because the area itself is protected due to bombs and landmines which still remain buried.
Take In The Sights In Vung Tau City
Leaving Nui Dat, we’ll head to the beach city of Vung Tau where we will enjoy a delicious lunch with a sea view. Then we’ll visit the must-see spots of Vung Tau, including a climb to the top of the lighthouse where we can view the whole city and the East Sea. Going back down, we’ll visit the last King Bao Dai’s White Palace.
The Adventure Isn’t Over Yet!
Before we head back to Ho Chi Minh City, we’ll have a chance to take a photo with the famous Statue of Jesus on top of the hill. We’ll return to HCMC around 5:00 pm and drop you off at your hotel or anywhere you would like to go within HCMC. Before farewell to our guide, please make sure you get some good recommendations from him/her on where to further explore the city.
See What Our Guests are Saying
Nam is an excellent guide who is passionate about telling the stories of the Long Tan Battle between the Australian and Vietnam military, the Nui Dat Australian base and the fascinating tactics of both sides as they endeavoured to get the upper hand. Importantly, Nam brings the historical events alive with firsthand stories from Vietnam Veterans and their families.
Nam arrived early to our hotel and explained the day’s itinerary. We travelled in a very comfortable vehicle with good aircon.
After Long Tan we had a delicious lunch at a Vung Tau restaurant with beautiful views of the beach. Our host pampered us with cold water, plenty of bathroom stops snd took photos of us together.
We highly recommend this tour and our guide Nam and very competent driver.
Our (myself and my two children 13 and 11) tour was amazing! My father served in Vietnam and it was so special to see where he was based. Our guide Huong even located where his camp would have been in Nui Dat. She stop the car happily every time I wanted to take a photo and her knowledge was extensive. Our lunch was in a beautiful location in vung tau and was delicious. I highly recommend doing this tour, especially if you have a connection to the Vietnam/American war. Please note that there isn’t a lot of evidence that Australia was there so a guide is essential. And the hills that were significant to the Australians and New Zealanders are now quarries so will not be there in ten years time. Grateful to have visited now.
An amazing experience and certainly a highlight of our two weeks in Vietnam. Mr Nam was very informative and well above what was expected. As a daughter of an Australian Returned Serviceman, it was a true privilege to be given a tour by Nam as he was full of knowledge about the Australians role in the Vietnam war. Don’t hesitate, book your tour.
Our family with teenagers and our 4yr old did this tour on 22/3/16, our tour guide was Bui. We were driven down to the area and then a local guide, Wombat took us around the sites. It was truly incredible the entire experience. Each site we had just enough time to take in the meaning of what had occurred and the ceremony wombat performed at the memorial was perfect. Even gave us a rose to put in front of the memorial. I would highly recommend using maika tours for all your tours. Bui was a beautiful person, he kept my boys entertained with his games. He also knew when to speak and when to let us rest. I would only use this company if i come back.
What can one say, the tour to Long Tan Vietnam was a highlight of our visit to this wonderful country. We booked a private day tour to Long Tan with Maika tours and were picked up from our hotel in a new and clean mini bus. Giang was most welcoming, knowledgeable friendly and sincere. Our local guide “Wombat” was brilliant well spoken and well organised and had a great sense of humor. We visited the Long Tan cross site and several other important sites in the area where Australians fought during the Vietnam war. Both Giang and Wombat were very thoughtful and considerate and gave us sometime to ourselves at the Long Tan site. The entire day was memorable and special. I think this company will go from strength to strength.
Thank you Giang, Thank you Wombat.
We booked Maika Tours for four people (two couples). We booked a private tour to Long Tan and a private tour to Cu Chi Tunnels.
Miaka Tours was fantastic, in all aspects. Giang answered so many questions and was extremely helpful through the booking process and remained in contact with us throughout both tours via WhatsApp.
Both tours were extremely informative and enjoyable. The tour guides, on both occasions, were full of knowledge, passion and were very informative. The guides were happy to go as fast or as slow as we needed/liked.
I completed the Long Tan tour in early December and would highly recommend it to all. The guides and driver were great and knowledgeable and exceeded my expectations.
The tour covered both Long Tan and a number of sights in Vung Tau, however the commemoration conducted by local guide Mr Binh at Long Tan was a standout.
Definitely make this part of your HCMC itinerary.
Our Guide Mr Nam had such a wealth of knowledge and passion and we were so happy to have him as our guide.
This was a special tour for our family to visit with my father a former Tunnel Rat based in Nui Dat. Nam knew the former military base in and out and was able to give insight into the location you would not know otherwise.
Nam was extremely respectful to former veterans and we were able to pay appropriate respects to former soldiers at each site.
Thanks again – I would like to visit again with Mr Nam soon
We cannot recommend the VTVFCF Long Tan Nui Dat tour highly enough. Our guide, Chris, who is an Australian veteran, was a wealth of knowledge and presented this in a respectful and sensitive way. He’s also very entertaining and great company!
We enjoyed every aspect of this well organised tour. We had private transfers arranged by Chris to and from our accommodation in Ho Tram.
An added bonus of taking this tour is knowing that the profits are used to support children and families in need via the VTVFCF.
A very special and interesting tour for Australians. We visited the Nui Dat base and the Long Tan memorial. We saw the rubber plantations and were shown pictures of what the area was like during the war. We also visited the Long Phuoc tunnels. We went to Vung Tau for a delicious lunch. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in seeing this part of Vietnam. A wonderful day.
The memorial is not sign posted nothing about the Long Tan offensive is marked so you really need a guide who is knowledgeable and keen to show you the sites of the camps and airfields as well as the memorial. We wanted a Long Tan experience and that is just what we got. The tour was educational as well as informative we would have had no hope finding the markers and relics shown to us on our own. The before photos were a great help to get our bearings on where we were. We got so much from it. It is a long the day the driver was great, the car comfortable. Lunch- well we let that be a lovely surprise for you, needless to say it was fantastic.
Our guide Ms Huong was very knowledgeable and friendly. She brought the areas around Long Tan to life with comparisons to historical photos. The car ride was comfortable, and the seafood lunch was delicious. Would definitely recommend this tour!
Our visit to Long Tan was a deeply moving and educational experience, made unforgettable by our exceptional tour guide Nam. From the moment we arrived, the guide’s professionalism and knowledge of the history surrounding the Long Tan Cross Memorial were evident.
The tour included plenty of time to reflect at the memorial, which was much appreciated. We also enjoyed learning about the local area and its connection to the events of the Vietnam War.
This tour exceeded our expectations and was incredibly organised. We had an amazing day trip where we learnt so much about Vietnamese history and culture. Ms Huong is one of our favourite tour guides in Saigon, her passion and knowledge was the highlight of the tour. We would definitely recommend this tour, especially for first time travellers to Vietnam.

Was absolutely the best tour I had an amazing guide who contributed to an equally amazing experience I would highly recommend it and can confirm that it was money well spent, big thumbs up!
