Itinerary
Off We Go!

bombshell at a former battlefield

Our local guide will pick you up at your accommodation located in Hue and we will depart for the historic Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) in Quang Tri. Quang Tri Province was once among the most heavily militarised areas in the world. This area also received more carpet bombings, airstrikes, and artillery assaults than any other province in Vietnam. Along the way, you’ll hear gripping stories about the region’s tumultuous history while witnessing the lasting scars of war that still mark the landscape today.

Uncover the Symbols of Quang Tri

the rockpile hill

Our first stop will be The Rockpile, a lone karst rock formation outcropping north of Route 9 and south of the DMZ. The area became a key outpost from which American and South Vietnamese forces could observe movements from the People’s Army of Vietnam and Viet Cong.

Next, continue with a stop to visit Dakrong Bridge, a rebuilt cable-stayed bridge marked as a significant route along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. This remarkable structure stands as a symbol of peace, national pride, and architectural excellence.

Step into the Past

an old airport

Later on, Khe Sanh Combat Base will bring history to life with its haunting remnants, including planes, helicopters, bunkers, and a museum showcasing its wartime past. This short visit offers a powerful insight into the magnitude of the battle, the political dynamics, and a chance to honour the people who fought on the site.

Nearby, you will see Ta Con Airport, part of Khe Sanh Combat Base and a historic military airbase serving as a strategic outpost for the US Marines and South Vietnamese forces. Although no longer in use, the runway and bunkers remain, providing a window into the area’s past.

After the morning full of vivid war history, we will return to National Route 1 and head to Dong Ha Town for lunch at a cosy local restaurant.

Witness Hien Luong Bridge – A Span of Reunification
a bridge with Vietnam's flags

Early afternoon, we will leave for Hien Luong Bridge, a unique national historical relic site located right on the 17th parallel, crossing the Ben Hai River. For 21 years during the Vietnam War (1954–1975), Hien Luong Bridge served as the dividing line between North and South Vietnam.

The bridge we see today has been restored with a welcoming gate. On both banks of the river, remnants of the past stand as reminders of a time of division – the “Desire for a Unified Country” on the southern bank and the loudspeakers on the northern bank used to deliver messages.

The Tunnels of Perseverance

an entrance to the underground tunnels

As the afternoon unfolds, we make our way to the final stop of the tour, Vinh Moc Tunnels. This extensive underground network was built by local villagers to shelter from relentless bombings. Notably, historical records indicate that around 60 families lived inside the tunnels for several years, and even 17 babies were born here.

The tunnel complex features 3 interconnected floors and 13 entrances, with 7 opening to the sea and 6 leading to the hillside. The sea-facing openings help regulate the temperature, keeping the underground chamber cool in summer and warm in winter.

At the end of the history-themed day, we will journey back to Hue City Centre. Our tour guide and driver will drop you off at your preferred location. If you want to take another immersive and authentic day tour from Hue, don’t hesitate to contact us(opens in a new tab).
