Itinerary
Journey to Heart of Vietnam’s Rice Bowl

a man on a machine boat

The Mekong Delta can be easily accessed from My Tho, Tien Giang Province – just 1.5 hours south of Ho Chi Minh City, making it a perfect day trip for those with limited time. It is literally the rice bowl of Vietnam for its vast stretches of lush paddy fields thriving on fertile wetlands.

Even on a short day tour, you can capture typical moments of locals’s life revolving around the rivers – getting around, catching fish, and managing their orchards. Though the dominating scene here is a vast network of canals and rivers crisscrossing each other, there’s so much more to see and do, with nature reserves, ancient traditions, floating markets and tropical islands.

Experience a Bucolic Islet

Once we enter the province of Tien Giang, step aboard our private boat for a cruise along the Mekong River and make a stop at one of the four sacred islets of the Mekong Delta – Thoi Son Islet (also known as Unicorn Islet). Thoi Son Islet is the largest islet among the four and boasts abundant orchards and local specialties, making it a perfect setting for ecotourism.

To gain a deeper insight into the local life, visit a local family and a typical orchard filled with fresh tropical fruits. It’s time to taste these freshly picked seasonal delights while listening to traditional southern Vietnamese folk music.

Tour around Handicraft Workshops

After savouring different flavours, continue your exploration in Ben Tre province. Ben Tre is made up of three different islets, including An Hoa, Minh and Bao, as well as the alluvial deposits of four rivers – Tien, Ba Lai, Ham Luong, and Co Chien.

Our stop will be An Hoa Islet, where you will discover why Ben Tre earns its fame as the “Kingdom of oconuts”. Visit a family-owned workshop and witness many steps involved in the process of making coconut candies, from extracting coconut milk to wrapping and packaging.

Next off, another interesting thing worth your attention is the colourful art of mat weaving. Mats can be used for various purposes, such as sleeping, dining, and sitting, both in homes and places of worship. In Vietnamese culture, mats are also considered a symbol of warmth and hospitality.

The workshops have filled your curiosity with intricate processes, and now it’s time to fill your empty stomach with local delicacies. Enjoy a motor cart ride (around 8 km) through coconut palms in Phu An Hoa to Vuon Dau restaurant for a classic Mekong-style lunch.

Enjoy the Cool Breezes of Coconut-Lined Canals

Following the special Mekong lunch, transfer to a smaller rowing boat to get deeper into the narrow coconut-lined canals. You will surely be amazed at the boatman’s remarkable skills. Then, get on a motor boat and move slowly along the river banks lined with fishing farms as we make our way back to My Tho.

As we leave the Mekong Delta for Ho Chi Minh City, feel free to ask your expert guide some more questions about the local culture. Your private driver will drop you off at your hotel or any other location previously arranged.
