Itinerary
Visit a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Your private, English-speaking guide will pick you up from your hotel. Once you’ve exchanged greetings, you’ll transfer to a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle for your exploration of this culturally rich region. The former seat of the Nguyen Dynasty and Vietnam’s capital city up until 1945, Hue is a fascinating city with much to explore!
Our first stop is, of course, the Citadel where the last king of Vietnam, Bao Dai, stepped down on August 30th, 1945. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is guarded by an ancient moat and thick stone walls. The vast Citadel encompasses the Imperial City, Forbidden Purple City and the Royal Theatre, so stretch those legs and get ready for a morning of exploration!
Discover Hue’s Hidden Gems!
Making our way well off the tourist track, we’ll visit Thuy Xuan Village, a time-honoured craft village in Hue, known for colourful incense sticks, which from afar resemble bouquets of flowers. Here, you’ll also have the opportunity to gain a fascinating insight into the skill of conical hat making, guided by friendly local people.
Next up is the tomb of King Tu Duc, the most popular and impressive of all the royal mausoleums. It houses courtyards, pavilions, temples and chambers. Your tour guide will tell you all about its fascinating history and the king’s life of imperial luxury, from his 104 wives to the unfortunate ending for the 200 burial servants!
Cruise Down Perfume River!
Just before lunch, we’ll visit Bunker Hill which overlooks the Perfume River and boasts amazing panoramic views. The area served as a great military vantage point by providing secret observation posts for the surrounding territory. Many bunkers still remain so you’ll have the chance to get up close and investigate them.
We’ll have lunch and recharge our batteries at a cosy restaurant and then head off for our next destination: Tiger Arena. Tiger Arena is an ancient colosseum where tigers and elephants would fight to the death all in the name of royal entertainment.
The final leg of our tour today takes us to the iconic seven-story Thien Mu Pagoda, the unofficial symbol of Hue city. From here we’ll board a classic dragon boat and cruise down the Perfume River back towards the city, where your guide will take you back to your hotel.
See What Our Guests are Saying
I now refer my friends, family and colleagues, as well as book all of my tours, accommodation and flights with Maika because I feel very lucky to have finally found an organisation in Asia that gives me the confidence to do so.
The tour was very well organized, and the guide spoke very good English. We got to see and experience so many things: Besides visiting a pagoda and Buddha statue, we also went on a boat ride (with a stop to enjoy a coconut drink) and visited local businesses producing rice paper, conical hats and mats. We had fresh fruit and tea for a snack and Pho soup for lunch which was delicious! We had such a good day and would highly recommend this tour!
We went on this tour, two families of four, with children aged 9-12 years old. We were really happy with it and highly recommend. Lin was our guide and she was fantastic, would really do a trip with her again. It was nice to do this privately and easy to adjust with Lin if needed. Maika helped us book the accommodation in Can Tho which we really appreciated. Would highly recommend and for sure do again.
You did a great job looking after all of our family of 7. The kids enjoyed all the tours and especially the Mekong cruise …as did we……because the kids were so happy we got to enjoy some time to ourselves too. I would recommend Maika Tours if your thinking of visiting Vietnam!
